The Evening Esthie’s Blog Takeover #3 by Teneika Dennie

Walking in on our first day, I had a pen and a 100 page Hilroy notepad. The other girls all had binders, different coloured pens and post-its. I thought this was going to be an easy class to ace. That we would learn how to work some skin care machines and do some mani’s and pedi’s. Boy, was I wrong! But then again any occupation that ends in –cian should be challenging.

I never dreamed that I would have to learn about the anatomy of the body, hair and nails. Let alone their diseases and disorders. Its amazing how the body works and how much I, as an esthetician can have an affect on it.

I’m lucky to have a small class and an amazing instructor, Vanessa.  She makes me want to come to class by including us in whatever she’s teaching and how she’s teaching it. She encourages us and always makes sure we have what we need. It’s important to have a teacher who takes time to understand you and take interest in your success. I was terrified to wax eyebrows in the beginning, I mean eyebrows can literally make or break a persons face. So, I borderline forced my instructor to stay with me every time I did them. But with Vanessa’s support, attention to detail and precision; I have grown more confident. I plan on perfecting this skill and no longer fearing it.

Having only 4 women in my class has been one of the best educational experiences ever. We all have different opinions and views on life and in class.  In a larger class you don’t really get to know everyone. I love that I’ve got the chance to see how everyone works and the method to their madness.

This month we’ve finally moved past waxing, manicures and pedicures. We’ve made our way into facials and skin care. I’ve been so excited for this one!! I love giving facial massages. With the relaxation music and knowing the client is completely at ease, I too am at ease. There’s less pressure and it’s just me, the facial products, and the music.

Student of the Month: Ayman Al Mukdad

We are very proud to announce our February Student of the Month, Ayman Al Mukdad. We sat down with him and asked him some questions about why he chose hair and what he sees for the future.

Ayman and his daughter

What made you decide to go into the hair industry?

I chose the hair industry because I can invest in my creativity, meet new people every day, and add to my sales and marketing experience with a touch of beauty.

Why did you choose Delmar?

When I was looking for a school I went to the apprenticeship office and that led me to Delmar.

What are your plans once you graduate?

Once I graduate I will try to get my red seal as soon as possible while I am working in a salon. I should have my own salon within one to two years.

What has been your favourite thing you have learned so far?

It was a new experience and challenge in my life because I never worked in this industry before. I learned that nothing is impossible, we have to be patient, smart, and work hard to reach a goal.

We definitely agree. Hard work pays off. Congratulations Ayman! We know that you are going to be hugely successful in anything you do. You are truly a Delmar Ambassador.

Don’t Quit Your Day Job

Have you ever thought about going back to school to learn a new skill or start a new career, only to find that the program hours and the weekly commitment would be too much? Maybe you looked into some evening classes through a continuing education department, only to find that funding was never an option.

We hear stories like this all of the time. In response we have developed a variety of programs that can be taken in the evenings and weekends.

Nails by Nail Technician graduate Cassandra Aravena

Our Nail Technician, Hairstyling Pre-Employment, and Professional Esthetics programs can all be taken in an evening/weekend format, and are eligible for student aid.

Lash Extension graduate Sara working on her lashing skills in class

Eyelash Extensions, and all of our Makeup modules can also be taken in the evening, but are currently not eligible for student aid funding because they are shorter programs.

Esthetics graduate Lindsey practicing microcurrent

Delmar College has been creating successful grads since 1950. We have seen a lot change over the past 67 years, and we have changed along with it. The advent of full time programs offered in a non-traditional format is just one example.

Happy graduates!
