Hi! I’m Lily and I am a student in the esthetician program at Delmar and loving it! When it came to choosing where I wanted to study, I had a handful of places in mind, but luckily for me, Delmar made the decision easy. When I met with Linda, the Director of Esthetics, her welcoming smile and passion for what she does won me over right away. Hearing about how she got to where she is today ignited something in me and I left that meeting full of excitement, ready to get started!
I am currently in my 8th week of 27 and can’t believe how quickly the weeks are flying by! Each week I look forward to theory in the mornings with Rae. Her style of teaching just clicks with me and I enjoy sharing in her knowledge. Then my afternoon is spent with Christy in the spa, where I develop my practical skill. Thanks to Christy’s patience and talent we were able to take our first clients last week and all though it was a little nerve- racking it was a lot of fun to put what we had learned into practise.
Without sounding too much of a cliché I have loved everything about my Delmar experience this far, pedicures being my favourite service -to my surprise! I have to give a shout out to my classmates, I feel extremely lucky to have such a motivational, supportive group of girls and I look forward to growing in knowledge and skill with them.
If I was to give future students any advice I would say just show up everyday ready to learn and have fun.
I am so excited in what the future holds for me, once I have graduated I hope to work in a spa to develop my skills further and gain some real life work experience. My dream is to own a spa and with a lot of hard work and dedication I believe this is possible.
A big thank you to my instructors Rae and Christy, your guidance and encouragement has built my confidence and continues to do so everyday. I can’t wait to see what the rest of my Delmar journey will entail.
Hello again everyone. This is my second diary entry, and hair school is starting to get really interesting.
They really kicked up the work load starting this month, and it’s beginning to get a little challenging, but I know that this is something I really want to do with my life so I’ll never give up! So far in the month of June we have learned all line cuts and we just finished learning all of the layers as well. The next thing we will be learning about is graduation in cutting hair, and I’m really excited about this but also just a smidgeon nervous because I’ve heard from classes that are a couple months ahead of us that that’s when it gets harder!
One thing I’ve noticed that has improved since I’ve started hair school is my time management. My agenda has become my best friend, because even with going to school 30 hours a week, and working on your days off you need to make time for yourself and still have fun so you don’t get stressed out!
Delmar also gets tickets for students at discounted rates sometimes, and I highly recommend going to the hair shows. I’ve only been to one so far, but I learned a lot and discovered new colouring techniques! I also met many successful people in the hair industry from all different product lines.
We are just now getting into our practical exams. We did our first mock head massage exam, and it actually went really well, I was super nervous and shaking a small amount when my instructor was watching me to make sure I was doing it right but other than that I really enjoyed the experience!
Monthly tip : Never use your hot tools on high heat!! A girl in my class was using the curling iron on my hair and it was on high heat because her hair and the mannequin hair could handle it, but since my hair had been processed it just melted an entire curl off.
Our very own Hair Design instructor Nilo traveled to L.A. and participated in an upstyling class with the one and only Georgiy Kot.
We featured a ton of amazing work from our last student photo shoot. All professional images by Brandon Shaw of Analog Dog Creative Ltd.
We announced our June Student of the Month, and Delmar Ambassador, Cheril Lim. Cheril wrote an amazing blog post for us last week. Click here to read it.
Team Delmar came together on a Sunday and walked to raise money for ALS research.
Hair Design student Morgan Calvert posted her first journal blog entry, explaining what the first month of hair school involves. Click here to check it out. And stay tuned because next week we will be hearing from her again as we feature her and her journey through Delmar.
Congratulations to Retailer of the Month award winner Brittany!
Congratulations to Perfect Attendance award winners Keely, April, and Mary!
Our Hair Design students attended the Cosmoprof Hair Exchange and took in a day of networking and education.
And finally, we celebrated two amazing women. Olga and Donna both worked for Delmar for over 40 years, and both retired this year. The college has not been the same without these funny, talented women. You both helped shape this industry in Alberta and touched so many lives.
