So you decided to start hair school. A new chapter. A new me. OK, let’s do this! Just Breathe!

Life at Delmar is scary right off the hop. It’s a new chapter of life, new people surrounding you daily, new information and now you’re supposed to retain ALL OF IT. 😭

In reality, sit down and relax. It’s just different than what you’re used to. It’s fast paced, it’s new knowledge, which also basically turns into an entire new language that you’ll be talking with numbers, letters, degrees, and everything you would have never realized unless you have a hairstylist in your family.

From day one when you meet with your instructors, your classmates, and tour the building, until about 3- 6 months in, it’ll start coming together why they do things the way they do them.

Want some advice? Actually study at least once for your exams. No joke. First term more or less sucks compared to second, but I promise you that new language you’re learning, it’ll make sense the further into your learning you get! You’ll get why you had to learn the chapters that felt like you’d never use the info and that were never-ending. You’ll get where the history of hair came from and how things came to be over time.

When you get to the floor and begin taking clients, you’ll have that gut wrenching, palms sweaty, moms spaghetti type of moment again. Take a breath, all that stuff Drew taught you about cutting will come to you, the instructors are by your side endlessly and will help you every step of the way, and that’s when you retain what you’re doing and think back to that chapter you thought wasn’t helpful.

There’s also been so many opportunities to do hair outside of school, in a real world setting, which has been an amazing experience. Networking is key in this industry and I’ve met some really great people thanks to the opportunities I’ve had through Delmar thus far!

For a student, this isn’t the easiest thing you’ll do career wise, but Delmar definitely kicks your butt into gear to help prepare you for your career to take off. If you stick with it, it’ll be worth it in the end! As one of the instructors told our class; ‘we’ll get you through this, even if means you’re kicking and screaming the entire time’…. and so far it hasn’t been even close to that, so we’re doing good! 😉
