Where is Emily now?

Emily is 7 months into her professional career as a Apprentice working under Accentric Salon & Spa in Sage Hill Calgary, Alberta. Emily has successfully completed 2/4 government exams so far, and cannot wait to complete the next 2. Emily separates her skills from others by “stepping out of a comfort zone”. She builds a diverse clientele by servicing clients from many different ethnicity’s. Where some may not be comfortable with Extremely curly hair – she excels! She loves to challenge herself with all hair types and to continue her growth in the industry!

What Emily does?

Emily provides all services, however her specialty is Balayage, up styles, braiding, and cutting curly hair. We asked Emily how important re-booking is to her. This is her response: ” asking a client to re-book is very important. Depending on what the service is, keeping a client consistent with their appointments and home care will keep their hair maintained and they will be grateful”. This is her way of keeping her clients coming back for more & happy with their results.

Color is Kathy’s forte however she still keeps fresh with cuts too!

Here is what Kathy has to say about Delmar College:

“My experience at Delmar College was GREAT! I was taught everything I needed to know to enter into the hair industry with full confidence. Getting my license was a piece of cake because Delmar’s training was so intense (in a good way). I love how the classes were smaller and our instructors were very caring with our education. A lot of people will say ‘ you will forget everything you learned in hair school and develop your own ways’ but even today I am using a lot of the skills that Delmar had taught me!”

“A day as an Esthie” By Rozalyn Edwards

Hello Delmar followers,
My name is Rozalyn and I am a junior in the Professional Esthetics program at Delmar College. I feel truly honored to be apart of the Delmar blog list.

20180206_100555

Firstly, a bit about myself. I decided to come to Delmar College because I was feeling like I needed a career change. Working in retail and being a certified florist didn’t make me happy anymore. My mom has been a hair stylist for my entire life and told me to get into the beauty industry. I was Being stubborn for many years, But now I finally did it!

20180404_222023.png

In January our class started off with lots of theory. Vision boards about our goals, science projects about the Anatomy & physiology of the body and more! Finally the fun stuff.

Next, it was waxing and tinting. Which I love! There is something so satisfying to remove hair from the body.  Finding models for this has  been a bit of a struggle. At first, I thought I  only needed new friends (haha)…But no I just needed to get out of my comfort zone,  and branch out to all social media outlets to bring in models. With success I got many people for the upcoming model days.
My first practical exam on waxing made me so nervous but, with an awesome instructor and some confidence I got through it! In February, we started manicures and pedicures. Manicures were fun until someone wants red nail polish!
Thank you Sam for teaching us polish applications from the very first week of class. It truly helped when it came to the practical exam.

Learning Facials
Pedicures are a bit of a challenge for me. I had to find ways to hold up legs without straining my hand. Good thing every day is an improvement. Time for Facials, facials, facials!
20180207_135740.jpg
Rozalyn practicing facials
March has been all about the skin. Learning about different skin types, the Fitzpatrick scale and the disorders & diseases of the skin. I really had no clue there is so much to learn when it comes to our skin. I am having the time of my life at Delmar College meeting and learning beside awesome people!  I now have my practical exam to prepare for here soon, so stay tuned to my monthly blog to hear about how my program is going, and whats going on at the Aesthetics campus!

“PUBLISHED” A guest blog by : Elyse Roberge

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a part of the fashion
world. I started modelling at a young age and always had a love for the hair
and makeup involved.

Delmar helped me start out my career as a hair stylist by giving me opportunities to work as a Volunteer stylist on the set of test shoots for Numa Models.

Elyse behind the scenes at Numa

Through working at Numa and my previous modelling experience I have been able to reach out to contacts and photographers that I’ve known/met and began working alongside them for editorial photo shoots. Recently I had the pleasure of working behind the scenes doing hair for Jian Von Esmane who is an amazing photographer and has been published many, many times and even in Vogue!

(photo left: Test shot for Numa,  Photo Right: Published Numa model Hair: Elyse Roberge)

This shoot had a very serious high fashion vibe to it which was fun for me because I don’t have much of that in my current hair portfolio. The shoot we did ended up getting published in Beautymute Magazine issue 42 in Paris, France!

Diary of a hair student #8 by Morgan Calvert

Hello everyone,

It’s been amazing lately with school and all the opportunities it has opened up for me even before I’ve graduated. I recently started working at Tommy Guns in the downtown core location and love it.

IMG_1084
School is crazy busy right now. We’re doing so many things at once including some final projects and our second term midterms are coming up. I am honestly super nervous about it. I’m also really excited about graduating and being able to work in a barber shop or salon full time.
In the last month I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my hair colouring and hair cutting skills because of all the time we now spend on the floor.

Over the holiday season we had a contest for who could sell the most amount of gift cards under our names. I am happy to share with you that I came in second and also attained top retailer of the month!
I was never one to do well in high school so being able to accomplish so much at something I really love is amazing and empowering.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of my recent hair makeovers on some of the amazing clients I have had the chance to work with at Delmar.

Thank you for reading.

“Wake up Call” A guest blog by Mariah Rycroft

The moment you finish your 1400hrs here at Delmar College our graduates move on to the second step of their learning process, Apprenticeship. Sometimes, we tend to only  hear the success stories and then get to thinking “How hard can it be?” Not every Happy ending comes with a successful beginning. Today, we hear from a graduate of Delmar College and her story of how hard it really can be.

IMG_0045
– Mariah Rycroft

The day I received my diploma from Delmar I was beyond excited. I couldn’t believe how accomplished I had felt. I made it through the hours of studying and practicing for both theory and practical exams, made it through the numerous highs, and the numerous lows, it was a dream come true. I was so excited to get out there and get my hands in hair and start building up my clientele, boy was I in for a bit of a wake up call.

I received a job at a boutique salon, which I thought would be a great environment for someone fresh out of school. I soon came to realize the environment of this salon was not what I was looking for. There was not a lot of educational opportunities for a beginner like myself in this particular salon, and for someone who was starting to realize school could only teach you so much, it was very disappointing. This was only the tip of the iceberg so to speak. It was hard to realize that this was it? When starting out you’re told that you that you will “assist” and “learn” from senior stylists. For me this wasn’t the case. I was bullied at work. I was under appreciated, and I was looked down upon.

After only working there for a couple months, it was decided that I would no longer be working for that salon. I then would go on to spend the next couple months working retail to help pay the bills. I had started to convince myself I had made the wrong decision in choosing hair as a career. Then, everything changed when I received the opportunity to interview at Redbloom salon.

The amount of support, education, and confidence I’ve regained working at this salon has been impeccable! I now love waking up everyday to go to work! Which was always something that was important to me when deciding what to do with the rest of my life.

There are a few things I believe are important for those wanting to enter into the industry, or those ready to graduate and take the next step.
One: Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you chose an easy career. It is not easy whatsoever! With that being said, it is also a very rewarding career to be able to make people feel beautiful and confident!
Second: Never lose your passion! No matter what life throws at you. When I lost my job, I was going through multiple personal issues as well. I thought I would never be able to regain my passion towards anything. Luckily, I had an amazing teacher at Delmar, who I stayed in contact with, and she was able to push me to get back out there. I will never be able to thank Brittany Connors enough for giving me tough love. My mom also played a huge part in regaining my confidence, as she never stopped believing in me.
Lastly, I believe to be of the most important is to be picky! Be picky in the salon you choose to apprentice in. Do your research, see what each salon will offer you education wise, and support wise. It makes a world of difference when you work for a well organized business.

All in all my experience outside of school has been what some would call a roller coaster, but I couldn’t be happier to be on this crazy ride, and can’t wait to see where it will take me next!

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for joining me again for this this months blog 🙂

School is basically just like working in a salon now that in into my last four months of school. Its been fun being on the salon floor and finally starting to feel like an actual hair stylist!

I don’t have much new information about the actual program at this time, other than its been a lot of fun and the time in the program  has been going by very quickly.

Here’s some pictures of all the cuts and colors I have actually  remembered to take pictures of. 🙂

Thanks again for reading my blog this month!
