Student of the Month: Christopher Sauer

Wow. Speechless. To start this off I should probably thank my instructors Rae and Christy, because without them I wouldn’t be where I am in the program at this point. Rae’s talent in the classroom keeps my thirst for knowledge strong and it never feels like a “lesson” when I am in her class. Christy’s guidance and constant encouragement in the spa makes the challenging part of my day all worth it. A round of applause for the Director, Linda, who went above and beyond during our first meeting and made me really excited to go back to school.

Accepting my award for Student of the Month from Audrey. I got a BT-Sonic device!

Last year around this time I was comfortable. I had kept a job I didn’t mind for more than a year! I had just bought my first home! I was looking forward to a vacation getaway for my 28th birthday! All was good in my hood. Then things took a turn for the worse. My mother’s cancer had spread and she was admitted to a hospice. My days were then spent caring for her and making sure she was comfortable. To say the least, it was a challenging time for my family and I. I’m not sure where I would be if it weren’t for my support system during this time.

16790043_1484260424973334_1001675592782839808_n

My class is a great team. Here we are working on each other. We each have to try every service that we learn. It’s been great because you really understand the treatment from the perspective of a client AND a provider.

I had been toying around with the idea of going back to school for a while before I made the decision to take an esthetics course. I had passion for the industry but after working the retail side for so long I wasn’t sure which direction to take. I was apprehensive when I first started my research on local schools, to be truthful, I wasn’t convinced it was for me. After some encouragement I decided to book a single tour at Delmar with Linda, I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?

20170301_144819

For my Creative Makeup project I took inspiration from Surrealism and Frida Kahlo, an artist that I love and admire

Fast forward a few months. I had just left Delmar after my meeting with Linda! I texted my partner and my grandmother and let them know that I just had one of the best meetings of my life! My excitement couldn’t be contained and I could barely believe that I was going back to school that November. Linda knocked me out that day. Her passion for the industry was evident and her program seemed like a great fit. She ignited something in me and I immediately starting counting down the days until my program was to start.

fullsizerender_2

This is from our Industry Scavenger Hunt, when I was still a junior. My partner for the project was senior student, Jamie Osaka. We won and, more importantly, we had so much fun!

We’re going to fast forward again. I’m now nearly at the end of the professional esthetics program and I can’t believe how quickly time flew by. I think time passed by so quickly because I found where I’m meant to be. Tuesday through Friday feels like a break from Saturdays and Mondays (when I force myself to go to work). I look forward to my mornings in the classroom with Raelyn, where I get to hone my theoretical skills. I spend my afternoons with Christy in the spa, where I develop my practical skills. Surprisingly none of this feels like a burden. I’ll admit it’s hard, it’s really hard, I was afraid the first time I took a client. I’m happy to say that I survived, I got over it, took my own temperature and did my best.

IMG_20170113_190515_446

One of my first pedicures

The future looks bright. I’m not exactly sure where I am going and that’s okay. I hope to take the clinical program when my course is through (…I’ve really loved doing facials, especially advanced). My dream is to own my own spa and be an educator. With all I’ve learned at Delmar, I don’t doubt this is possible.

IMG_20161220_172443

One of my first manicures

This is a quote that was shown in video form during theory that really hit me.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Ira Glass

If you’re reading this and you yourself are toying with the idea of taking this course: just do it.

2017 at Delmar: February’s Recap

Here’s a look at what we got up to around the college in February.

Our students were BUSY. On the floor, in the classroom, with clients, and in all departments, it was non-stop.

We started and ended the month with a men’s hair cutting workshop for some of our classes. Our students cut the hair of almost 100 men between those two days. It was great practice for them all and we also want to thank all of the guys that came down and helped support a student. You guys rock!

Speaking of rock, we had another successful student photo shoot with the amazing Brandon Shaw from Analog Dog Creative. Here’s a few shots to give you a taste. Professional images to come soon.

Don’t Quit Your Day Job

Have you ever thought about going back to school to learn a new skill or start a new career, only to find that the program hours and the weekly commitment would be too much? Maybe you looked into some evening classes through a continuing education department, only to find that funding was never an option.

We hear stories like this all of the time. In response we have developed a variety of programs that can be taken in the evenings and weekends.

Student of the Month: Kylie Lebedeff

My name is Kylie Lebedeff, I am 22 years old. Hair school was not my first post-secondary institution I attended. Straight out of high school I attended university pursuing a degree in education. After 3 years I decided that education wasn’t for me. After talking to different schools and universities I decided Delmar College is where I wanted to be.

Working on styling in class

I started my education at Delmar in August 2016, and have loved each day. There is never a dull moment at school; each day is filled with new theory and practical. Even when we are practicing finger waves and perms all day long, I never feel that I am not enjoying my day at Delmar.

I really love this style I created

Getting better at the things I struggle with is all part of growing as a stylist. Cutting has so far been my favourite part of school. Andrew is a great instructor and has always pushed me to do my best and beat my goals.

Student of the Month, Jamie Osaka, was featured in our last blog post (click here to read it), and she won an awesome prize for, well, being awesome! She is our first ever school-wide student of the month recipient. How do you get this title? Simple. Just be a Delmar ambassador and your instructors could nominate you. From all those nominations, one name will be chosen per month.

Some of our students and staff spent a Sunday getting creative with some amazing presentations and demonstrations at the Grey Eagle Casino for the IBS Beauty Roundup.

What an amazing month we had! Thank you to everyone who made it so. December brings the holidays, and all the cheer that goes with it. We can’t wait to showcase all the glitz and glam that will happen around the college! December also brings a giving spirit, and all of us at Delmar would like to embrace that and help our fellow Calgarians during what can be a hard time for so many. For the month of December we will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Calgary Food Bank. If you bring in a minimum of three of those items to your next appointment in December, you will receive 20% off your services that day.

Artist Spotlight: Catching Up With Cameron Byrne

This week we were pleased to have a guest artist and educator in the house. Cameron Byrne hails from London, England. He is a L’Oreal ID Team member, a multiple-time finalist in the L’Oreal Color Trophy, and a member of the RUSH workshop team. And we think, an all round cool guy.

L’Oreal Colour Trophy Grand Final 2015

He shared his knowledge with our Hair Design students and instructors in a workshop format on July 19 and 21. Everyone was really excited for the presentation, and they all felt like they took away something valuable from the experience.

I, of course, wanted to blog about it. More importantly though, I wanted to get Cameron’s story. So many of our students have the desire to be platform artists and competitors, but get lost in how to get there. He was very obliging and shared his story with me. In his own words, here it is, from beginning to now…

•What inspired me to become a hairdresser-

I think it started in my early teens. I didn’t realise I wanted to be a hairdresser but I was really into fashion and my own hair.

Then my dad married Tara (Director of Hair at your very own Delmar College) and I just was really interested in what she was doing and she steered me in the direction of hairdressing.

She took me to Salon International in London when I was 17/18 and I was hooked! I loved the energy in the room, all the creativity, all the interesting people and I came away desperate to get involved.

L’Oreal Colour Trophy Regionals 2016

•My journey-

I began training at the Toni & Guy Academy London in their beginners course.

After successfully completing the course I was offered an assistant position at their Mayfair branch.

This was an amazing area to work, but after a few months I felt like I was stagnating because I was qualified, but needed to get experience, so wasn’t training as much. So I moved closer to home in Essex with a company called Uppercut.

There I met an amazing stylist called Red who was into competitions and photo shoots. This whet my appetite for competitions and the creative side of hairdressing.

We both moved to a salon called Spargo, but it was a side step, and while researching for a shoot I came across images from Rush Hairdressing.

Rush Photographic Image Awards – second place winner

I loved their work. Slick, precise, structured and award winning.

Completely different cutting to what I was doing. So I joined them to learn their craft.

I wasn’t retrained, but I put myself on as many courses as I could at their academy and practiced the new techniques whenever I could.

Once my confidence grew I auditioned to be on their workshop team. I failed, but this didn’t dishearten me and I was back the year after.

Hair Club Live

This time was a success, and from then on I was having one on one training with our International Art Directors Andy Heasman, Tina Farey and Chris Williams.

Their knowledge is priceless and these are the hairdressers who have made me who I am today.

I have now been at rush 7 1/2 years and a workshop team member for 5 1/2 years.

• Highlights-

Actually qualifying is amazing in itself, this is a really hard trade to learn so I pat anyone on the back that gets to the shop floor

As I said before, I got into hair competitions quite early so any time I make regionals or grand finals I’m proud.

But the best achievement has to be becoming a L’Oreal ID Artist.

This program has developed me as a presentation hairdresser 100%. It builds your confidence and stage presence. The exposure is huge and you get to work with like minded creatives and absorb their energy and knowledge.

It is a really hard audition with mood boards, model, presentation, research and against the clock skill tests. Only 2 people get on from each region so to be one of them was a huge achievement.

• Advice for people wanting to be hairdressers-

It is hard work but there are so many rewards.

You can go down so many avenues. Be a salon owner, educator or session stylist.

Learn your classic’s!!! No one who is amazing at creative work skipped their classic’s. They are our foundation.

Invest in yourself, go on as many courses as you can. Be a sponge, try and vary the type of courses you do so you can find what style you like.

“Serve the client”, make them feel amazing and you will grow your clientele quickly. Keep yourself educated and you will educate your clients correctly.

Enjoy it, it’s the best job in the world!
