THE JOURNEY INTO CLINICAL ESTHETICS

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH! Are you searching for it? Many people are searching for non-surgical ways to slow down the aging process. While there are a number of anti-aging retail products on the market, many people are looking for more immediate results.

Clinical Esthetics offers many non-invasive treatments to help improve the skin’s elasticity, reduce wrinkles, refine the skin’s surface, reduce the look of scars and to help treat acne to name but a few.

Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Micro-needling, laser treatments, chemical peels and light therapies are used to treat many different skin conditions. All of these services are offered at Delmar Wellness Centre in Calgary and at our new Spa location in Red Deer!

Minimal downtime.✔️Promotes collagen production ✔️Improves skin texture and tone ✔️Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles✔️Improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks✔️Helps reduce hyperpigmentation

After a thorough analysis and consultation, your clinical esthetician will determine which service is best suited to your needs.

Current Delmar student Dariana gave us her insights into the industry and why she has chosen to take the ‘Journey into Clinical Esthetics’.

What is your background and what prompted your decision to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I came from Venezuela to Canada a year and a half ago to pursue a better quality of life. I studied Accounting for 4 years and I worked in the field for 7 years. I am so passionate about beauty from inside – out and I decided to achieve my dreams when I came to Calgary. I took the Clinical Esthetics program at Delmar College to develop my skills and meet the necessary standards to stand out in the industry.

In your opinion, what do you see as the future trend in the Esthetics Industry?

I do believe in the success and growth of the Esthetics industry. I see a brilliant future with high demand from young and older people. There are new products in the market every day, such as cruelty free, artisanal or organic products that reach the expectations of almost everybody who wants to take care of their skin. Also, providing a treatment from a professional Clinical Esthetician can give to the clients a personalized care, in order to help them with many discouraging skin conditions, such as aging.

Why do you think there has been an increase in the number of people choosing to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I think the number of people pursuing Clinical Esthetics is been increasing due to the success and effectiveness of medical beauty treatments. Both women and men are seeking treatments to help them look younger with non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Describe your experience at Delmar, the program and quality of instruction.

My experience at Delmar was great! I learned a lot from my instructor and also from my classmates. Studying at Delmar College has helped me develop the confidence I need to start in the beauty industry. In my opinion, Delmar has the best Clinical Esthetics program in town! It includes trending treatments in the market as well as new technology machines. The instructors have so much experience in the field and they share that knowledge with you.

Once you have completed your program, what is your goal?

Once I complete the program my goal is to take an entrepreneurial route. The knowledge and skills that I attained during this program apply to the work I will build in the following months. Furthermore, I plan to learn more about beauty and cosmetic tattoo after finishing this program because it is not the end of my learning. I want to stay up to date in my field and be the best.

What opportunities are available to those who take Clinical Esthetics?

There are infinite opportunities for those who choose Clinical Esthetics as a career. There are a lot of spas, salons and surgeons’ offices in and out of the city who are consistently hiring clinical estheticians. I think everything will depend on the vision, effort and passion that students have for their profession. Also, Delmar College’s students have a high reputation in the field as the school is well known for the quality of their instructors.

What is your favourite service to receive and why?

My favorite service to receive is Microneedling because I know how effective it is and how it works on the face. I also love microneedling because my skin reacts great after getting the treatment done. It provides deep hydration to the face and gives a bright and glowing texture to the skin.

What is your favourite service to perform and why?

My favorite service to perform is Chemical Peeling because after choosing the right peel and the right products the results are amazing. Performing a chemical peel can give totally transform the face.

Do you have a favourite product line or products you prefer to use and why?

I like using Skinceuticals products. They have variety of products for all skin types and conditions. Their serum is amazing and it works perfect on sensitive skin like mine. After using Skinceuticals serum and moisturizer, my face feels much more hydrated with a great texture.

Makeup Trends by Erin Halisky

BLUSH!

Blush is back! Think 80’s and the electric blush colours they had back then. Matching it to your nail polish, your lip colour, even blending it up to as far as your temples is going to make a statement this year. Sounds a little crazy but when done properly can be such a cool look. One of my faves during these cold Albertan winters is cream blush! Apply it like you would with regular blush using a blush brush, circular motions, applying to apple of the cheek first and blending all the way back to the hairline. Gives you a beautiful winter glow!

15970428_10157994387865542_73443786_n

BOLD AND PASTEL LIPS!

Having a really well defined dark or pastel lip – Both can be really hard to achieve and sometimes hard to find!  My favorite pastel and really dark colours of lipsticks I have are from MAC and MAKE UP FOR EVER.  Tip: Always apply on dry lips so no bleeding occurs.

Pastel: Sometimes when using pastel colours it’s better to conceal the natural lip pigment with your concealer before going in with the lipstick.

15995709_10157994387835542_822080382_n

Dark: An easy way to enhance those really dark colours that can get messy is taking concealer to define and clean up your lip line.

15970478_10157994387805542_82762061_n

EASY SMOKY EYES!

Most of us can be a little scared to try anything smoky when it comes to our eye shadows but the key is a good primer and blending. My absolute favourite to use is Painterly by MAC. Having a good amount of this layered onto the lid, apply a bold shimmery colour all over your lid using a blending brush in circular motions. For the crease colour choose an even darker matte colour. Add highlight just under the brow bone and in the corner of the eyes. This look doesn’t necessarily require eyeliner and that’s what makes it so easy. I always like loading on the mascara and adding a little gel liner in my waterline to make my eyes look more pronounced.

Saved my favorite for last….

GLITTER!

If it was up to me, glitter would be in all year long! But its sooo pretty in these winter months. You can get them in pigment form which is a little tricky to use or you can get them in the form of liquid eyeliners. These eyeliners you can easily build and get an elegant look in no time. My favorite that I recently discovered are by Revlon. You get a coloured liner on one side and a gel glitter on the other. Viola!

I am so excited for all the upcoming trends in makeup. I am also REALLY excited to announce that we are now offering a Diploma in Makeup Artistry at Delmar College. It is a modulated diploma, so you can earn it at your own pace. I’m teaching the first module in a couple weeks, and the second in March. If you love makeup like I do (a lot), come take my class!

Student of the Month: Kylie Lebedeff

My name is Kylie Lebedeff, I am 22 years old. Hair school was not my first post-secondary institution I attended. Straight out of high school I attended university pursuing a degree in education. After 3 years I decided that education wasn’t for me. After talking to different schools and universities I decided Delmar College is where I wanted to be.

Working on styling in class

I started my education at Delmar in August 2016, and have loved each day. There is never a dull moment at school; each day is filled with new theory and practical. Even when we are practicing finger waves and perms all day long, I never feel that I am not enjoying my day at Delmar.

I really love this style I created

Getting better at the things I struggle with is all part of growing as a stylist. Cutting has so far been my favourite part of school. Andrew is a great instructor and has always pushed me to do my best and beat my goals.

We can’t wait to showcase all the glitz and glam that will happen around the college! December also brings a giving spirit, and all of us at Delmar would like to embrace that and help our fellow Calgarians during what can be a hard time for so many. For the month of December we will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Calgary Food Bank. If you bring in a minimum of three of those items to your next appointment in December, you will receive 20% off your services that day.

They were broken into a few different teams, were then given a sealed box full of clothing and jewelry, and had to create a full look that included make up, nails, and some basic hair styling based on the items they received. It was so much fun! Congrats to our winners, Brenda, Nicole, Taya, and Cheyanne!

SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel

Anyone else feeling that chill in the air?

Canadian winter has finally come to Calgary and while we may get some glorious Chinooks this season, for the most part it’s going to be COLD. I don’t know about you, but my skin really starts to change around this time of year. Things start to feel a little less hydrated and may I say, even a little sensitized…

So, in an effort to search out the perfect solution to my winter skin woes (you think I would have found one at this point in my career, but my skin is fickle to say the least), I tried the Phyto Corrective Gel from SkinCeuticals.

Now let’s back up…

Remember how I just implied that I maybe have had a long(ish) career and have yet to find something that keeps my face happy. Like, maybe I have spent thousands of dollars and probably hours of my life trying to find that magic little potion, to no avail.

I’m sure you know what’s coming…

I have found it!

Phyto 2

Well, a whole line of happy little potions really, but today I’m just going to focus on the Phyto Corrective Gel because it does two very awesome things for me personally AND I want to tell you all about the other awesome things it can do for you.

Drum roll please…

Phyto 4

Awesome thing #1

It contains sodium hyaluronate (think hyaluronic acid)

Pretty well anyone who lives in a dry climate should make hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate their new best friend. Why? Because of its ability to hold onto water.

The difference? Sodium hyaluronate has a smaller molecular size, so it can penetrate deeper into the skin than hyaluronic acid. It is able to hold 1000 times its weight in water.

Hydration is important for any skin type because we all need water and the air here is literally stealing water from you!

That amazing ability to penetrate + binding/holding/attracting water deep in the skin = a happy hydrated you!

Phyto 5

Awesome thing #2

It reduces inflammation

How?

Cucumber seed extract. This little ingredient packs a big punch, in that it helps to soothe and calm, but also contains its own water, lipids, and vitamin C. Perfect for bringing down inflammation, which can be associated with many skin conditions, including Rosacea, acne, aging, and sensitivities.

Those are my main two reasons to love this product. But what else is in there?

Phyto 9

Bearberry leaf extract, which is a super antioxidant, fighting premature aging and fine lines.

Grapefruit extract. Full of vitamin C to help protect from free radical damage and can have a brightening effect on the skin.

Thymus Vulgaris extract. Extracted from the herb, Thyme. It has shown to be effective in killing the bacteria that is associated with acne, and apparently it does it much more effectively than traditional ingredients like benzoyl peroxide. It is also a potent antioxidant.

All those things combined make this into a wonderful multi-purpose skin product. I love using it on acneic clients. They end up loving it too because it really helps to clear them up without drying them out. I don’t suffer from acne. I actually have the opposite problem, I lack oil (sebum) and have an impaired barrier function on my skin. This means I’m losing water at a super fast rate, so I really need something that’s going to hold onto that glorious H2O.

How is it used?

First, wash and tone your face. Once you have washed and toned apply a few drops of your antioxidant serum (if you are doing this step/already use SkinCeuticals).

You are now ready for your Phyto Corrective Gel.

Squeeze the top of the dropper bottle lid while the product is still sealed shut. This allows for a good amount of product in the dropper and ensures that you are getting all the good stuff.

Phyto 6

Unscrew the bottle top and drop about 4 to 5 drops into your hands/fingers. This should be enough to cover your whole face and neck.

Phyto 7

Massage this over your face and neck. Follow up with an eye cream, and finish with a moisturizer.

I really like the retail packaging of this entire line because it is gender neutral. No pink bottles or perfume here. Both the packaging and the product bottles are kept simple, so you know you are paying for what’s inside and not just what’s pretty.

I love the dropper feature and the glass bottle. It looks very professional and is a clean way to apply product because you are never putting your fingers inside and you don’t have to touch the end of the dropper to get the product out.

Phyto 1

Both thumbs up, and some very happy skin from this girl
