THE JOURNEY INTO CLINICAL ESTHETICS

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH! Are you searching for it? Many people are searching for non-surgical ways to slow down the aging process. While there are a number of anti-aging retail products on the market, many people are looking for more immediate results.

Clinical Esthetics offers many non-invasive treatments to help improve the skin’s elasticity, reduce wrinkles, refine the skin’s surface, reduce the look of scars and to help treat acne to name but a few.

Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Micro-needling, laser treatments, chemical peels and light therapies are used to treat many different skin conditions. All of these services are offered at Delmar Wellness Centre in Calgary and at our new Spa location in Red Deer!

Micro-needling

Uses very fine, small needles to superficially puncture the skin inducing the generation of collagen. A numbing agent is used prior to beginning the service. Minimal downtime.✔️Promotes collagen production ✔️Improves skin texture and tone ✔️Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles✔️Improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks✔️Helps reduce hyperpigmentation

Dermaplaning

A manual exfoliation treatment that removes vellus hair and the top layer of dead skin cells.✔️Increases cellular turnover✔️Helps skincare products penetrate deeper✔️helps reduce hyperpigmentation ✔️The skin feels silky smooth

After a thorough analysis and consultation, your clinical esthetician will determine which service is best suited to your needs.

Current Delmar student Dariana gave us her insights into the industry and why she has chosen to take the ‘Journey into Clinical Esthetics’.

What is your background and what prompted your decision to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I came from Venezuela to Canada a year and a half ago to pursue a better quality of life. I studied Accounting for 4 years and I worked in the field for 7 years. I am so passionate about beauty from inside – out and I decided to achieve my dreams when I came to Calgary. I took the Clinical Esthetics program at Delmar College to develop my skills and meet the necessary standards to stand out in the industry.

In your opinion, what do you see as the future trend in the Esthetics Industry?

I do believe in the success and growth of the Esthetics industry. I see a brilliant future with high demand from young and older people. There are new products in the market every day, such as cruelty free, artisanal or organic products that reach the expectations of almost everybody who wants to take care of their skin. Also, providing a treatment from a professional Clinical Esthetician can give to the clients a personalized care, in order to help them with many discouraging skin conditions, such as aging.

Why do you think there has been an increase in the number of people choosing to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I think the number of people pursuing Clinical Esthetics is been increasing due to the success and effectiveness of medical beauty treatments. Both women and men are seeking treatments to help them look younger with non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Describe your experience at Delmar, the program and quality of instruction.

My experience at Delmar was great! I learned a lot from my instructor and also from my classmates. Studying at Delmar College has helped me develop the confidence I need to start in the beauty industry. In my opinion, Delmar has the best Clinical Esthetics program in town! It includes trending treatments in the market as well as new technology machines. The instructors have so much experience in the field and they share that knowledge with you.

Once you have completed your program, what is your goal?

Once I complete the program my goal is to take an entrepreneurial route. The knowledge and skills that I attained during this program apply to the work I will build in the following months. Furthermore, I plan to learn more about beauty and cosmetic tattoo after finishing this program because it is not the end of my learning. I want to stay up to date in my field and be the best.

What opportunities are available to those who take Clinical Esthetics?

There are infinite opportunities for those who choose Clinical Esthetics as a career. There are a lot of spas, salons and surgeons’ offices in and out of the city who are consistently hiring clinical estheticians. I think everything will depend on the vision, effort and passion that students have for their profession. Also, Delmar College’s students have a high reputation in the field as the school is well known for the quality of their instructors.

What is your favourite service to receive and why?

My favorite service to receive is Microneedling because I know how effective it is and how it works on the face. I also love microneedling because my skin reacts great after getting the treatment done. It provides deep hydration to the face and gives a bright and glowing texture to the skin.

What is your favourite service to perform and why?

My favorite service to perform is Chemical Peeling because after choosing the right peel and the right products the results are amazing. Performing a chemical peel can give totally transform the face.

Do you have a favourite product line or products you prefer to use and why?

I like using Skinceuticals products. They have variety of products for all skin types and conditions. Their serum is amazing and it works perfect on sensitive skin like mine. After using Skinceuticals serum and moisturizer, my face feels much more hydrated with a great texture.

NEW AGE BARBERING

Barbering has made a huge comeback but with an ultra-modern feel! The ‘short sides and back’ have been replaced by sculptured, precise fades and pompadours as well as skin fades and detailed hair tattoos. The talent seen in these modern barbershops is incredible! Men’s grooming is here to stay and Delmar’s goal is to make sure all Barbers are licensed. We have adapted our program for those wishing to become licensed barbers and have incorporated all aspects of barbering while still preparing these students for their government licensing exams. We will be highlighting the journey of some of our Barbering students to see what inspired them to become barbers and showcase their work.

We spoke to Mark Bautista. He is extremely passionate and talented as evidenced by his work on Instagram and his work has been reposted by Barbering sites!

What inspired you to become a barber and when did you realize this was your passion?

I come from an artistic background and have always been fascinated by style and fashion. While attending university, I started to become interested in hair especially as I watched barbers on YouTube do creative haircuts and share how much pride they took in honing and improving their craft each time they cut. I thought to myself: “I want to be just like these guys!” That’s when the aha moment came and I started practicing on all my family members and friends. I really enjoyed the social aspect of it and how much impact I was making by making someone look their best. The feeling of satisfaction that I got after each cut is when I realized that this was my passion.

What is your favourite service to receive and why?

A hot shave even though I have very little facial hair because its a relaxing escape from world and I feel like a king being pampered.

What is your favourite service to perform and why?

Medium length men’s haircuts because I get to work on building shape and texture through scissor work. I believe that the art in barbering lies in mastering your scissor work. Everything else will fall into place once you truly understand how to utilize your scissors.

What are some of your insights into Barbering trends?

One of the most prominent trends that I have observed in the barbering industry is we are slowly moving away from perfect polished super clean looks to more lived-in, versatile low maintenance looks. Men are more willing to rock longer and more natural textured looks.

Who are your favourite barbers on Instagram and what about them inspires you?

@stephenj.barber: He is my personal barber and he has been my biggest mentor so far. He has inspired me to investigate the “why” to everything I do in hair so I make sure that I am intentional in everything I do.

@andrewdoeshair: He has inspired me to take quality photographs of my haircuts. He has taught me how to use the proper lighting and camera to highlight and make my work stand out on Instagram.

@joshlamonaca: He is the co owner of one the most coveted men’s salon in the world- Menspire Salon. Josh has inspired me to really appreciate the classic and contemporary shapes and techniques of men’s barbering. He has taught me to always work in clean sections and focus on the fundamentals of haircutiing such tension, over direction, body position and so forth.

Describe your Delmar experience so far. What have you enjoyed the most and why?

What I have enjoyed most so far in my time at Delmar is all the friends I have made. I enjoy coming to school because I like hanging out with my classmates and teachers. It makes learning fun.

What are your future goals once you have finished school and achieved your license?

One of my biggest goals is to be able to be a platform educator and travel the world sharing my passion for hair.

What barbershop are you in what is your Instagram?

I will be apprenticing at Johnny’s Barbershop + Shop starting in April 2019. My Instagram is @markbarberology.

Alumni Profile: Lindsey W

It’s been just over a year since I decided to take the esthetics program at Delmar, and exactly 6 months since I graduated the program with honors, and a perfect attendance record. This was something I was extremely proud of (and still am!) but when it came time to put everything I had learned into practice, it was a little scary!

Lindsey W 2.2.png

I started working for Skoah doing retail and reception while I was still an esthetics student. My program at Delmar was 4 days a week, so I worked 3 days a week at Skoah as a Skin Care Coach. I decided I wanted a foot in the door of the beauty industry before I graduated, and this was a good place to start. I loved my weekends there, learning the product line, and getting a feel for the environment.

Lindsey W 2.1

For anyone who doesn’t know much about Skoah, it is a facial only spa – we call ourselves a “skin gym” complete with memberships, just like regular gyms, and my official title as an esthetician is “Skin Care Trainer”. The philosophy is that your skin needs regular workouts (facials) to stay healthy and look its best – just like your body! It is a Canadian company founded in Vancouver. I love supporting Canadian companies and take pride in working for one, and contributing to its success!

Lindsey W 2.3.png

So some of you might be thinking: “you ONLY do facials?! Don’t you get bored? What about all your other skills?” It’s true. I only do facials, but it absolutely does not get boring! Every single person’s skin is different, and I get endless satisfaction out of figuring out what is best for each individual person’s skin type, accomplishing their goals, and figuring what kind of home care regimen is going to fit into their daily schedule. It is like a giant puzzle for me to solve, and is so satisfying when I finally do! It is also true that I learned so many more skills at Delmar that I am currently not using, but skin care was always where it was at for me! Any one of my classmates, and my instructors can tell you how much I hated manicures, and how I swore after my last quota that I would never do another manicure in my life! Okay, that was dramatic of me, but there is absolutely nothing stopping me from pursuing different aspects of esthetics in the future!

image8

For now I love my days spent at Skoah helping people feel the best about their skin, and helping them get the healthiest skin they could possibly imagine! I love getting results from my products and my facials, and seeing my clients on a regular basis. I can’t tell you how many women come in and say “I have developed adult acne and I need help!” I give them a relaxing facial, educate them on how to properly take care of their skin, and send them home with a regimen that we have discussed, and then 4 weeks later they come back with improved skin!  It’s such a great feeling knowing that I have actually helped them feel better about themselves and taught them something that they didn’t know before! Educating my clients is one of my favourite parts of my job, and I would not be able to do this if I hadn’t received the best education possible from my wonderful instructors at Delmar. I often hear Raelyn’s voice in my head, telling me to slow down my massage, or making me recite the secrets of client retention. I cannot thank her enough for always demanding excellence of me in school, and therefore I now demand excellence of myself in the workplace.

My time spent at Delmar molded me into the successful esthetician I have become over the last year. I have excellent sales, I have loyal clients that trust me to take the best possible care of their skin, and wonderful co-workers that I constantly learn from; I feel so proud to be where I am. The possibilities are still endless for me and my career. This is just the beginning for me! I will soon start to be trusted to train new Skin Care Trainers that start at Skoah, which is a very big responsibility that I am excited to be entrusted with! And then after that who knows where my career path will take me! All I know is that the sky is the limit, and that I am forever grateful to my time at Delmar for setting me up for success.

The Evening Esthie’s Blog Takeover #4 by Cathy Fillion

……so, where were we last time we blogged? Oh, that’s right fears and visions of clients leaving without eyebrows. Clients looking at us square in the eye and saying “you really don’t know what you are doing, do you?”

None of that happened.

The Evening Esthie’s just completed their waxing final last week.  So please feel free to book as space is limited. Not only do we promise to leave you hairless in the designated areas but our practice with professionalism and confidence might just have you taking a nap as we provide the service. So, with waxing behind us we continue to practice on mani’s and pedi’s.

IMG_9848

We are learning both straight and French, light and dark colours, lacquers and gels. I discovered just like waxing, it is not as simple as it looks with mani’s and pedi’s. There is a real science to looking at the foot for diseases and disorders, cleaning up the foot through cutting, filing, scraping callouses and dead skin, cleaning up cuticles to create beautiful smile line.

We covered all the knowledge in class first so we would be prepared and armed with knowledge of the physiology and anatomy of feet and hands and the diseases and disorder we will come across at work. So, all this before we even dip that brush into that beautiful bright colour that will put a smile on our clients face! In our case especially, since spring is literally right around the corner.

IMG_9847

With many a model day, practicing on each other and some paying clients we are approaching spa approved mani’s and pedi’s. Thanks to Vanessa our talented, intelligent, and patient instructor. She taught us how to hold that bottle of polish, how to stabilize the foot or hand we are painting and because of this we are rarely flooding nails and completing a service in spa time.   We also got the opportunity to join Raelyn’s class last week and started learning nail art.  We are now busy practicing flowers and animal prints. An added bonus to offer a client who wants something extra special in their service.  As I mentioned this is a real science and takes a lot of practice, patience and a chuckle now and then.  With this service, I can only say practice, practice, and practice again!  So, with all that we continue to finish our quota’s.

IMG_9849

We are now focusing on skin and specifically the face. Understanding the different skin types, the needs, the contraindications, the realistic expectations of a service. I have mature skin so no matter how many treatments my 20 something skin is no longer. However, maintenance, lifestyle, and sun protection will keep my beautiful healthy skin radiant. This knowledge and more I have learned in the last few chapters of our textbook. The presentation Krystle gave us in the fall about SkinCeuticals is being implemented. We are using models, clients and each other to practice and learn skin types, issues, SkinCeutical products, hot cabbie for towels, steamer for preparation of extractions, masks to bring impurities to the surface and massage.  It is a real toss up some days whether the facial and products used is the best part of the service or if the massage itself is really the best.

Hmmmm, I believe I need to do more homework on this and I promise to get back to you next time…….lol.

Behind the scenes in the classroom, we have been studying communicating for success, basics of nutrition, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, electricity, facial treatments, facial massage, skin analysis, physiology and histology of the skin and diseases and disorders of the skin. We just finished all that study last week with our midterm. Quizzes, projects and tests kept us busy and better prepared to know how to take care of our clients when performing treatments. All this knowledge has built our confidence and the importance of knowing the parts of the body we are working on. It is about pleasure and fun for sure but is also about the safety of that client too.

So, the Evening Esthie’s have been very busy.  We reached our half way point in the course the other day. I must say the time has really flown and the experience thus far has been simply amazing. A small class and our great instructor Vanessa has really made this journey to a new career wonderful.

Well I am happy I got a chance to chat and keep everyone up to date on the evening class. We are unique in size and class time and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am so grateful Delmar offered this night class as an option and hope that once they see their first one graduate in July they offer it again! So, until next time keep those hairs on the cheese cloth, tint those brows and eyes lashes, get those nails and toes painted and throw a flower on for the spring, and finish it off with a facial showing off that healthy beautiful skin you have. Face the world with confidence as you are truly beautiful at Delmar.

Student of the Month: Kylie Lebedeff

My name is Kylie Lebedeff, I am 22 years old. Hair school was not my first post-secondary institution I attended. Straight out of high school I attended university pursuing a degree in education. After 3 years I decided that education wasn’t for me. After talking to different schools and universities I decided Delmar College is where I wanted to be.

Working on styling in class

I started my education at Delmar in August 2016, and have loved each day. There is never a dull moment at school; each day is filled with new theory and practical. Even when we are practicing finger waves and perms all day long, I never feel that I am not enjoying my day at Delmar.

I really love this style I created

Getting better at the things I struggle with is all part of growing as a stylist. Cutting has so far been my favourite part of school. Andrew is a great instructor and has always pushed me to do my best and beat my goals.

Accepting my Student of the Month prize

Now that I have found the career path I feel most confident in I am thriving. My grades are the best they have been, my passion is growing every day and I love coming to school. I am confident this is where I should be and I cannot wait to grow further.
