The Evening Esthie’s Blog Takeover #4 by Cathy Fillion

……so, where were we last time we blogged? Oh, that’s right fears and visions of clients leaving without eyebrows. Clients looking at us square in the eye and saying “you really don’t know what you are doing, do you?”

None of that happened.

The Evening Esthie’s just completed their waxing final last week.  So please feel free to book as space is limited. Not only do we promise to leave you hairless in the designated areas but our practice with professionalism and confidence might just have you taking a nap as we provide the service. So, with waxing behind us we continue to practice on mani’s and pedi’s.

IMG_9848

We are learning both straight and French, light and dark colours, lacquers and gels. I discovered just like waxing, it is not as simple as it looks with mani’s and pedi’s. There is a real science to looking at the foot for diseases and disorders, cleaning up the foot through cutting, filing, scraping callouses and dead skin, cleaning up cuticles to create beautiful smile line.

We covered all the knowledge in class first so we would be prepared and armed with knowledge of the physiology and anatomy of feet and hands and the diseases and disorder we will come across at work. So, all this before we even dip that brush into that beautiful bright colour that will put a smile on our clients face! In our case especially, since spring is literally right around the corner.

IMG_9847

With many a model day, practicing on each other and some paying clients we are approaching spa approved mani’s and pedi’s. Thanks to Vanessa our talented, intelligent, and patient instructor. She taught us how to hold that bottle of polish, how to stabilize the foot or hand we are painting and because of this we are rarely flooding nails and completing a service in spa time.   We also got the opportunity to join Raelyn’s class last week and started learning nail art.  We are now busy practicing flowers and animal prints. An added bonus to offer a client who wants something extra special in their service.  As I mentioned this is a real science and takes a lot of practice, patience and a chuckle now and then.  With this service, I can only say practice, practice, and practice again!  So, with all that we continue to finish our quota’s.

IMG_9849

We are now focusing on skin and specifically the face. Understanding the different skin types, the needs, the contraindications, the realistic expectations of a service. I have mature skin so no matter how many treatments my 20 something skin is no longer. However, maintenance, lifestyle, and sun protection will keep my beautiful healthy skin radiant. This knowledge and more I have learned in the last few chapters of our textbook. The presentation Krystle gave us in the fall about SkinCeuticals is being implemented. We are using models, clients and each other to practice and learn skin types, issues, SkinCeutical products, hot cabbie for towels, steamer for preparation of extractions, masks to bring impurities to the surface and massage.  It is a real toss up some days whether the facial and products used is the best part of the service or if the massage itself is really the best.

Hmmmm, I believe I need to do more homework on this and I promise to get back to you next time…….lol.

Behind the scenes in the classroom, we have been studying communicating for success, basics of nutrition, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, electricity, facial treatments, facial massage, skin analysis, physiology and histology of the skin and diseases and disorders of the skin. We just finished all that study last week with our midterm. Quizzes, projects and tests kept us busy and better prepared to know how to take care of our clients when performing treatments. All this knowledge has built our confidence and the importance of knowing the parts of the body we are working on. It is about pleasure and fun for sure but is also about the safety of that client too.

So, the Evening Esthie’s have been very busy.  We reached our half way point in the course the other day. I must say the time has really flown and the experience thus far has been simply amazing. A small class and our great instructor Vanessa has really made this journey to a new career wonderful.

Well I am happy I got a chance to chat and keep everyone up to date on the evening class. We are unique in size and class time and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am so grateful Delmar offered this night class as an option and hope that once they see their first one graduate in July they offer it again! So, until next time keep those hairs on the cheese cloth, tint those brows and eyes lashes, get those nails and toes painted and throw a flower on for the spring, and finish it off with a facial showing off that healthy beautiful skin you have. Face the world with confidence as you are truly beautiful at Delmar.

Makeup Artistry at Delmar College

Are you interested in becoming a makeup artist? If you are, then you clicked on the right post, because today we are talking about how our makeup programs work here at the college.

Yes, programs. Not just one, but four different programs, leading to a diploma in Makeup Artistry if you choose to complete them all.

15995383_10157994387795542_1286242033_n
Makeup by instructor Erin Halisky

By breaking it down into different classes this gives you options and the opportunity to take it in full, or just focus on where your interests are.

So let’s break these classes down for you.

Everyone starts in Makeup 101. Why? Because we aim to set you up for success. This class gives you the core knowledge you need and also gives you a certificate in Infection Prevention Control, allowing you to safely and professionally offer makeup services.

The focus in 101 is on natural to dramatic makeup applications and allows you to have a good basis of knowledge and hands on experience for bridal and grad makeup applications.

Once you successfully complete Makeup 101 you have the freedom to take the other classes in any order you choose. That said, we do recommend that you take our 102 program prior to taking Makeup 104.

Makeup 102 is what we call our Advanced Makeup class. It is very much a hands on program that covers more advanced techniques for eye makeup, camouflaging techniques, ethnic bridal makeup, theatrical and fantasy applications, and also covers updo’s and heat styling for hair. This gives you the advantage of being able to style hair on photo shoots and for bridal or grad purposes, as well as doing the makeup.

khp_8297
Hair styling for photo shoots and bridal is covered in Makeup 102

Makeup 103 is our Airbrushing Workshop. This covers basic airbrushing principles to body work and stenciling. We are proud to partner with pro brand TEMPTU for this module, and include a professional grade kit with compressor and hand piece.

Makeup 104 is our Special Effects Makeup class. Learn how to work with latex and gelatin to create amazing fantasy pieces, including prosthetics.

We partner with the best in the business. Our kits are truly pro kits and prepare you to enter the industry as a freelance artist. Where do we source them from? Who other than pro brand MAKE UP FOR EVER. Our Makeup 101 and 102 modules include extensive kits from this amazing brand that was created by makeup artists for makeup artists. Our Makeup 103 kit is sourced from TEMPTU, and our Makeup 104 kit includes professional special effects products from a variety of brands.

Makeup Trends by Erin Halisky

BLUSH!

Blush is back! Think 80’s and the electric blush colours they had back then. Matching it to your nail polish, your lip colour, even blending it up to as far as your temples is going to make a statement this year. Sounds a little crazy but when done properly can be such a cool look. One of my faves during these cold Albertan winters is cream blush! Apply it like you would with regular blush using a blush brush, circular motions, applying to apple of the cheek first and blending all the way back to the hairline. Gives you a beautiful winter glow!

15970428_10157994387865542_73443786_n

BOLD AND PASTEL LIPS!

Having a really well defined dark or pastel lip – Both can be really hard to achieve and sometimes hard to find!  My favorite pastel and really dark colours of lipsticks I have are from MAC and MAKE UP FOR EVER.  Tip: Always apply on dry lips so no bleeding occurs.

Pastel: Sometimes when using pastel colours it’s better to conceal the natural lip pigment with your concealer before going in with the lipstick.

15995709_10157994387835542_822080382_n

Dark: An easy way to enhance those really dark colours that can get messy is taking concealer to define and clean up your lip line.

15970478_10157994387805542_82762061_n

EASY SMOKY EYES!

Most of us can be a little scared to try anything smoky when it comes to our eye shadows but the key is a good primer and blending. My absolute favourite to use is Painterly by MAC. Having a good amount of this layered onto the lid, apply a bold shimmery colour all over your lid using a blending brush in circular motions. For the crease colour choose an even darker matte colour. Add highlight just under the brow bone and in the corner of the eyes. This look doesn’t necessarily require eyeliner and that’s what makes it so easy. I always like loading on the mascara and adding a little gel liner in my waterline to make my eyes look more pronounced.

15978690_10157994387875542_341584775_n

Saved my favorite for last….

GLITTER!

If it was up to me, glitter would be in all year long! But its sooo pretty in these winter months. You can get them in pigment form which is a little tricky to use or you can get them in the form of liquid eyeliners. These eyeliners you can easily build and get an elegant look in no time. My favorite that I recently discovered are by Revlon. You get a coloured liner on one side and a gel glitter on the other. Viola!

15995383_10157994387795542_1286242033_n

I am so excited for all the upcoming trends in makeup. I am also REALLY excited to announce that we are now offering a Diploma in Makeup Artistry at Delmar College. It is a modulated diploma, so you can earn it at your own pace. I’m teaching the first module in a couple weeks, and the second in March. If you love makeup like I do (a lot), come take my class!

Student of the Month: Kylie Lebedeff

My name is Kylie Lebedeff, I am 22 years old. Hair school was not my first post-secondary institution I attended. Straight out of high school I attended university pursuing a degree in education. After 3 years I decided that education wasn’t for me. After talking to different schools and universities I decided Delmar College is where I wanted to be.

unnamed
Working on styling in class

I started my education at Delmar in August 2016, and have loved each day. There is never a dull moment at school; each day is filled with new theory and practical. Even when we are practicing finger waves and perms all day long, I never feel that I am not enjoying my day at Delmar.

unnamed
I really love this style I created

Getting better at the things I struggle with is all part of growing as a stylist. Cutting has so far been my favourite part of school. Andrew is a great instructor and has always pushed me to do my best and beat my goals.

We can’t wait to showcase all the glitz and glam that will happen around the college! December also brings a giving spirit, and all of us at Delmar would like to embrace that and help our fellow Calgarians during what can be a hard time for so many. For the month of December we will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Calgary Food Bank. If you bring in a minimum of three of those items to your next appointment in December, you will receive 20% off your services that day.

Hair + Creativity by Morgan McLaren

morgan

My outlook on hair is that it is another form of creative expression. Being someone who went to art school before hair school I can’t help but see the similarities. To me the transition has been just as fulfilling because I still get to use my creative skills every day.

When you look at hair, art, and design there are a lot of parallels. In hair we have to use our imagination and creative problem-solving  in order to create the desired look for clients. In art, a blank canvas is an opportunity and every client comes to us with their canvas (their hair). This is when creative problem-solving truly comes into play because you were working on a canvas that other artists before you have worked on.

Initially, we study the shape of our clients hair and work with that shape to create the most desirable form for their facial features. Then comes colour, where we have to work with their natural colouring as well as their artificial colouring to create our vision. To me colour is a lot like painting, our formulations are a mix of the primary colours just like when you paint. All this while figuring out the most flattering tones and which colours truly work best together. Popular today is the balayage technique, this free hand painting on your clients hair makes you truly feel like an artist. Each technique we learn can be expressed uniquely creating our own touch!

When it comes to styling, it really reminds me of sculpture work.  You are creating a desired texture with product to best showcase your form and colour. Also popular today is hair tattooing, which is like drawing into your clients’ hair. It’s so much fun doing that kind of work because you are challenged drawing on an uneven surface!

In regards to inspiration, like art and design, it is better to pull it from unlikely places. In hair, if you’re always looking at hair photos you are not pulling from abstract inspiration. I believe true creativity in hair comes from other places. You may be inspired by colour in nature, art, your daily life, food, and an infinite amount of other places. I think the combination of creativity and technical skill in hair makes it so fulfilling.

Like art, sometimes you get an artist’s block in hair. You may go through times where you feel uninspired. I think that is why education is so important. It challenges you to keep learning and expand your abilities. I am always left full of inspiration and fully motivated after a class.

Hairstylists use their creativity to create a look for their clients that suits their personality and lifestyle. Like design, you have certain parameters you have to work within and I think the hardest thing is controlling your creativity.
