THE JOURNEY INTO CLINICAL ESTHETICS

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH! Are you searching for it? Many people are searching for non-surgical ways to slow down the aging process. While there are a number of anti-aging retail products on the market, many people are looking for more immediate results.

Clinical Esthetics offers many non-invasive treatments to help improve the skin’s elasticity, reduce wrinkles, refine the skin’s surface, reduce the look of scars and to help treat acne to name but a few.

Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Micro-needling, laser treatments, chemical peels and light therapies are used to treat many different skin conditions. All of these services are offered at Delmar Wellness Centre in Calgary and at our new Spa location in Red Deer!

Minimal downtime.✔️Promotes collagen production ✔️Improves skin texture and tone ✔️Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles✔️Improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks✔️Helps reduce hyperpigmentation

After a thorough analysis and consultation, your clinical esthetician will determine which service is best suited to your needs.

Current Delmar student Dariana gave us her insights into the industry and why she has chosen to take the ‘Journey into Clinical Esthetics’.

What is your background and what prompted your decision to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I came from Venezuela to Canada a year and a half ago to pursue a better quality of life. I studied Accounting for 4 years and I worked in the field for 7 years. I am so passionate about beauty from inside – out and I decided to achieve my dreams when I came to Calgary. I took the Clinical Esthetics program at Delmar College to develop my skills and meet the necessary standards to stand out in the industry.

In your opinion, what do you see as the future trend in the Esthetics Industry?

I do believe in the success and growth of the Esthetics industry. I see a brilliant future with high demand from young and older people. There are new products in the market every day, such as cruelty free, artisanal or organic products that reach the expectations of almost everybody who wants to take care of their skin. Also, providing a treatment from a professional Clinical Esthetician can give to the clients a personalized care, in order to help them with many discouraging skin conditions, such as aging.

Why do you think there has been an increase in the number of people choosing to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I think the number of people pursuing Clinical Esthetics is been increasing due to the success and effectiveness of medical beauty treatments. Both women and men are seeking treatments to help them look younger with non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Describe your experience at Delmar, the program and quality of instruction.

My experience at Delmar was great! I learned a lot from my instructor and also from my classmates. Studying at Delmar College has helped me develop the confidence I need to start in the beauty industry. In my opinion, Delmar has the best Clinical Esthetics program in town! It includes trending treatments in the market as well as new technology machines. The instructors have so much experience in the field and they share that knowledge with you.

Once you have completed your program, what is your goal?

Once I complete the program my goal is to take an entrepreneurial route. The knowledge and skills that I attained during this program apply to the work I will build in the following months. Furthermore, I plan to learn more about beauty and cosmetic tattoo after finishing this program because it is not the end of my learning. I want to stay up to date in my field and be the best.

What opportunities are available to those who take Clinical Esthetics?

There are infinite opportunities for those who choose Clinical Esthetics as a career. There are a lot of spas, salons and surgeons’ offices in and out of the city who are consistently hiring clinical estheticians. I think everything will depend on the vision, effort and passion that students have for their profession. Also, Delmar College’s students have a high reputation in the field as the school is well known for the quality of their instructors.

What is your favourite service to receive and why?

My favorite service to receive is Microneedling because I know how effective it is and how it works on the face. I also love microneedling because my skin reacts great after getting the treatment done. It provides deep hydration to the face and gives a bright and glowing texture to the skin.

What is your favourite service to perform and why?

My favorite service to perform is Chemical Peeling because after choosing the right peel and the right products the results are amazing. Performing a chemical peel can give totally transform the face.

Do you have a favourite product line or products you prefer to use and why?

I like using Skinceuticals products. They have variety of products for all skin types and conditions. Their serum is amazing and it works perfect on sensitive skin like mine. After using Skinceuticals serum and moisturizer, my face feels much more hydrated with a great texture.

What program are you currently attending?

Clinical Esthetics

image8

What made you choose Delmar?

I have a few girlfriends that took the hairstyling course at Delmar and really loved it, so I decided to check it out. When I came for my initial appointment with the director Linda, she and everyone else I spoke with were super friendly, and answered all my questions. I was definitely impressed and felt welcome right from the get-go!

image2-1

What is your biggest inspiration?

All of the beautiful men and women doing their own thing, working hard and starting their own businesses, is truly inspiring. It’s amazing what we can all do when we put our minds to it. I love watching the success stories of my friends, colleagues and former classmates pop up on social media – warms my heart!

image6

What advice do you have for future students in your program?

Go for it! If you’re interested in the clinical side of esthetics, you’ll love it. This class is very informative. I’ve learned a ton that I honestly didn’t expect to, given the short time period. Maybe don’t be tanned – if you’re like myself who loved to tan, you probably won’t anymore – you will be convinced otherwise – in a good way.

image7

Where do you see yourself after graduating?

Long term I hope to open my own laser studio! But after graduation I plan to work in a dermatologists office for a few years here in Calgary and build my experience before moving back to the Okanagan and starting my own business.

image4

What has been your favourite part of school so far?

So far, I have enjoyed this course in all aspects, but Audrey definitely takes the cake for her course delivery! She is a really great instructor. I feel fortunate to be part of such an awesome, diverse group of classmates who all help and support each other… I will miss them all so much! – but look forward to hopefully working them in the future. As for the course itself, I’ve been most interested in laser, which I had presumed before starting the class. I’m also currently interested in micro needling, which has been a prime addition to the clinical esthetics class. I just had my full face done today – so excited to see the results!

Diary of a Hair Student Entry #4 by Morgan Calvert

Hello Everyone,

Being in school at Delmar college has been a lot of fun the last month, we learned a lot about the chemicals and ingredients that go into hair services and how they work. I personally find this stuff very interesting because I feel like once I have a complete understanding of everything that goes into hair color and lightening I will be able to start creating really amazing things with human hair.

We also just started doing color application and I find this to be really fun and surprisingly relaxing. There were a couple of people in my class that found it to be a little stressful, so if you decide to take a hair program and you are struggling, don’t panic because there are people that found it just as hard as you do that are now doing amazing!

This program is moving along way faster than I thought it would be, I feel like we just started the program and we’re about to start working on the salon floor this following month.

I think most of the class is pretty nervous about starting on the salon floor but I have a good feeling about everyone in the class doing well on the midterm exams and doing an amazing job on the salon floor.

I believe that as long as we all remember that we’re still learning, and not be too hard on ourselves, the turn out will be amazing!!

Below are some photos of everyone doing their first color application and some pictures of my first spiral perm wrap!

Until next time, stay positive!

Diary of a Hair Student Entry #3 by Morgan Calvert

Hello Everyone. This month we have been mostly focusing on our timing and getting everything organized for our midterm exams. I honestly haven’t been so nervous about anything in my life like I am for this! We did our mock exam last week and no one passed, but that’s okay because apparently no one ever passes the mock exam. So that makes me feel better!

img_0449

When you first start school everything is going to seem impossible but now that I’m into my third month I’m starting to feel pretty confident in everything other than finger waves. The whole class struggles with them so if you feel like you will never get the hang of it, that’s totally okay because I feel that way too! But I can see the improvement in mine and everyone else’s finger waves!

you_doodle_2017-08-04t17_27_18z

This month has been pretty crazy because our regular instructor Erin had to do her other class’s final photo shoot with them on some days so we had a bunch of different instructors filling in for her, and I can honestly say this is the first school I have attended where I liked all the teachers! Everyone here really knows what they are doing and do a great job educating their students!

I have learned so much more in hair school than I thought I was going to learn, but it’s honestly amazing and I’m still extremely happy with my decision to go to Delmar for hair dressing!

img_0478

I’m sorry for the lack of pictures this time because we haven’t really been working on anything new, but I did get all these pictures of what everyone’s finger waves look like after three months of practicing!

Until next time!

Morgan

Student of the Month: Lily Young

Hi! I’m Lily and I am a student in the esthetician program at Delmar and loving it! When it came to choosing where I wanted to study, I had a handful of places in mind, but luckily for me, Delmar made the decision easy. When I met with Linda, the Director of Esthetics, her welcoming smile and passion for what she does won me over right away. Hearing about how she got to where she is today ignited something in me and I left that meeting full of excitement, ready to get started!

img_0421
Receiving my award for Student of the Month
I am currently in my 8th week of 27 and can’t believe how quickly the weeks are flying by! Each week I look forward to theory in the mornings with Rae. Her style of teaching just clicks with me and I enjoy sharing in her knowledge. Then my afternoon is spent with Christy in the spa, where I develop my practical skill. Thanks to Christy’s patience and talent we were able to take our first clients last week and all though it was a little nerve- racking it was a lot of fun to put what we had learned into practise.

Scavenger hunt with senior student Nicole. We won 3rd place and had heaps of fun!

Without sounding too much of a cliché I have loved everything about my Delmar experience this far, pedicures being my favourite service -to my surprise! I have to give a shout out to my classmates, I feel extremely lucky to have such a motivational, supportive group of girls and I look forward to growing in knowledge and skill with them.

My amazing classmates!
If I was to give future students any advice I would say just show up everyday ready to learn and have fun.

I am so excited in what the future holds for me, once I have graduated I hope to work in a spa to develop my skills further and gain some real life work experience. My dream is to own a spa and with a lot of hard work and dedication I believe this is possible.

A snap from my wedding last year. I have lived in Calgary for 5 years, but I am originally from the UK. Having my family all together is a rarity and something I cherish. My family are my world and I miss them every day.
A big thank you to my instructors Rae and Christy, your guidance and encouragement has built my confidence and continues to do so everyday. I can’t wait to see what the rest of my Delmar journey will entail.

My Skills Canada Experience by Sarah Haji

Skills Canada. Sounds pretty cool right? But what did I do there?  In all honesty when Audrey (my coach) asked me if I wanted to compete I said yes without really knowing what I was getting myself into. Looking back now, hands down, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Even through the training sessions where I wanted to give up, the many many tears and the pressure of keeping composure under the scrutinizing eyes of thousands on the competition grounds, the personal and professional growth I experienced was utterly worth it.

IMG_0056
Audrey and I at the competition site for provincials in Edmonton, AB

How did this journey all start? Well it was a pretty typical day about mid January, I was asked if I wanted to compete in the area of nails with art, bridal and fantasy makeup, a facial, massage and waxing. Seemed like a lot but I was willing to work hard to do the best I could in all areas. Later that day, Audrey came and gave me what could be the equivalent of a small novel, filled with competition guidelines and rules, to the smallest details like how many minutes exactly I had to set up, tear down, and greet my client.

image1
Audrey and I, celebrating after I accepted my gold medal, and a spot on Team Alberta

Training itself started off pretty rough to be completely honest, it took many months of practicing the same things over and over again, hating it and starting over. But eventually the hours of work started to show and my confidence grew as the weeks went by.

Accepting my gold medal at provincials in Edmonton

Now fast forwarding to competing provincially in Edmonton. I had never competed in anything like it. It was set up in such a way that public viewers could walk around between the different booths and competitions, and could watch anything at any point, resulting that for the complete two days of competition, you were under the watchful eyes of not only the judges, but also the constant flow of thousands and thousands of spectators from a 360 view. By the end of both days I was crumbling from both exhaustion and stress of the day, but at the same time being so excited to do it all over again the next day. By the end, and having been on stage, gold medal in hand, I knew at that moment everything had been worth it, hundreds of times over.

IMG_0359

Less than two weeks later, I found myself on a plane on the way to Winnipeg to do this all over again against not only the province this time, but the entire nation. The nerves and the stress began the day we landed, the butterflies and the anticipation of meeting the 6 other opponents, all from various parts of Canada was at an all time high. When I finally did meet everyone, it was very relieving to see that they were all in the same situation and it helped quite a bit that every single one of them was kind and helpful towards each other not only on the first day but throughout all the competition days as well.

Me and my fellow competitors at Skills Canada in Winnipeg, MB. What an amazing group. I am so happy to have met them all.

Finally, the experiences and the friends I made throughout this entire competition were worth every struggle and battle faced leading up to, and during, both nationals and provincials. I have met and discussed with so many people from across Canada across the trade fields represented, and I definitely know that I wouldn’t have met any of them if it weren’t for this competition, much less become friends.

IMG_0360
That’s me running the Alberta flag across the stage at the Skills Canada awards ceremony! Every province had their team cross the stage to get the crowd pumped up for what was a really exciting closing ceremony. Photo credit: Skills Canada Alberta

I would strongly suggest to anyone who may have the opportunity to be a part of this fantastic experience to fully dedicate themselves to it. Yes it will be difficult, yes you will want to give up many times, yes the emotions run high, but at the end of the day, I will proudly say, for years to come, that this was an experience of a life time, I have made connections of a life time and I pushed myself to limits I never knew I even had.
