THE JOURNEY INTO CLINICAL ESTHETICS

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH! Are you searching for it? Many people are searching for non-surgical ways to slow down the aging process. While there are a number of anti-aging retail products on the market, many people are looking for more immediate results.

Clinical Esthetics offers many non-invasive treatments to help improve the skin’s elasticity, reduce wrinkles, refine the skin’s surface, reduce the look of scars and to help treat acne to name but a few.

Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Micro-needling, laser treatments, chemical peels and light therapies are used to treat many different skin conditions. All of these services are offered at Delmar Wellness Centre in Calgary and at our new Spa location in Red Deer!

After a thorough analysis and consultation, your clinical esthetician will determine which service is best suited to your needs.

Current Delmar student Dariana gave us her insights into the industry and why she has chosen to take the ‘Journey into Clinical Esthetics’.

What is your background and what prompted your decision to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I came from Venezuela to Canada a year and a half ago to pursue a better quality of life. I studied Accounting for 4 years and I worked in the field for 7 years. I am so passionate about beauty from inside – out and I decided to achieve my dreams when I came to Calgary. I took the Clinical Esthetics program at Delmar College to develop my skills and meet the necessary standards to stand out in the industry.

In your opinion, what do you see as the future trend in the Esthetics Industry?

I do believe in the success and growth of the Esthetics industry. I see a brilliant future with high demand from young and older people. There are new products in the market every day, such as cruelty free, artisanal or organic products that reach the expectations of almost everybody who wants to take care of their skin. Also, providing a treatment from a professional Clinical Esthetician can give to the clients a personalized care, in order to help them with many discouraging skin conditions, such as aging.

Why do you think there has been an increase in the number of people choosing to pursue Clinical Esthetics?

I think the number of people pursuing Clinical Esthetics is been increasing due to the success and effectiveness of medical beauty treatments. Both women and men are seeking treatments to help them look younger with non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Describe your experience at Delmar, the program and quality of instruction.

My experience at Delmar was great! I learned a lot from my instructor and also from my classmates. Studying at Delmar College has helped me develop the confidence I need to start in the beauty industry. In my opinion, Delmar has the best Clinical Esthetics program in town! It includes trending treatments in the market as well as new technology machines. The instructors have so much experience in the field and they share that knowledge with you.

Once you have completed your program, what is your goal?

Once I complete the program my goal is to take an entrepreneurial route. The knowledge and skills that I attained during this program apply to the work I will build in the following months. Furthermore, I plan to learn more about beauty and cosmetic tattoo after finishing this program because it is not the end of my learning. I want to stay up to date in my field and be the best.

What opportunities are available to those who take Clinical Esthetics?

There are infinite opportunities for those who choose Clinical Esthetics as a career. There are a lot of spas, salons and surgeons’ offices in and out of the city who are consistently hiring clinical estheticians. I think everything will depend on the vision, effort and passion that students have for their profession. Also, Delmar College’s students have a high reputation in the field as the school is well known for the quality of their instructors.

What is your favourite service to receive and why?

My favorite service to receive is Microneedling because I know how effective it is and how it works on the face. I also love microneedling because my skin reacts great after getting the treatment done. It provides deep hydration to the face and gives a bright and glowing texture to the skin.

What is your favourite service to perform and why?

My favorite service to perform is Chemical Peeling because after choosing the right peel and the right products the results are amazing. Performing a chemical peel can give totally transform the face.

Do you have a favourite product line or products you prefer to use and why?

I like using Skinceuticals products. They have variety of products for all skin types and conditions. Their serum is amazing and it works perfect on sensitive skin like mine. After using Skinceuticals serum and moisturizer, my face feels much more hydrated with a great texture.

Student of the Month: Lily Young

Hi! I’m Lily and I am a student in the esthetician program at Delmar and loving it! When it came to choosing where I wanted to study, I had a handful of places in mind, but luckily for me, Delmar made the decision easy. When I met with Linda, the Director of Esthetics, her welcoming smile and passion for what she does won me over right away. Hearing about how she got to where she is today ignited something in me and I left that meeting full of excitement, ready to get started!

Receiving my award for Student of the Month
I am currently in my 8th week of 27 and can’t believe how quickly the weeks are flying by! Each week I look forward to theory in the mornings with Rae. Her style of teaching just clicks with me and I enjoy sharing in her knowledge. Then my afternoon is spent with Christy in the spa, where I develop my practical skill. Thanks to Christy’s patience and talent we were able to take our first clients last week and all though it was a little nerve- racking it was a lot of fun to put what we had learned into practise.

Scavenger hunt with senior student Nicole. We won 3rd place and had heaps of fun!

Without sounding too much of a cliché I have loved everything about my Delmar experience this far, pedicures being my favourite service -to my surprise! I have to give a shout out to my classmates, I feel extremely lucky to have such a motivational, supportive group of girls and I look forward to growing in knowledge and skill with them.

img_0002
My amazing classmates!
If I was to give future students any advice I would say just show up everyday ready to learn and have fun.

I am so excited in what the future holds for me, once I have graduated I hope to work in a spa to develop my skills further and gain some real life work experience. My dream is to own a spa and with a lot of hard work and dedication I believe this is possible.

A snap from my wedding last year. I have lived in Calgary for 5 years, but I am originally from the UK. Having my family all together is a rarity and something I cherish. My family are my world and I miss them every day.
A big thank you to my instructors Rae and Christy, your guidance and encouragement has built my confidence and continues to do so everyday. I can’t wait to see what the rest of my Delmar journey will entail.

Student of the Month: Joan Lovely

Joan Lovely is our April Student of the Month and is a true Delmar Ambassador. We sat down with her and asked her some questions about why she chose Delmar and what her future plans are.

IMG_9920

What made you decide to become an Esthetician?

I wanted to learn how to take better care of my skin, and how to educate others to take better care of their own skin too.

What made you choose Delmar?

In my opinion, Delmar has a great teaching reputation. I also felt that the price of the Esthetics program was fair.

What has been your favourite part of the course so far?

Facials!

Do you have any advice for new students?

Don’t miss classes and be committed to the program

What are your plans once you graduate?

Look for a job that is related to my course and get some real-world work experience

Keep up all the great work Joan!

Stay tuned because next week we will be checking in with Esthetics alumni, Lindsey Wilkinson.

The Evening Esthie’s Blog Takeover #4 by Cathy Fillion

……so, where were we last time we blogged? Oh, that’s right fears and visions of clients leaving without eyebrows. Clients looking at us square in the eye and saying “you really don’t know what you are doing, do you?”

None of that happened.

The Evening Esthie’s just completed their waxing final last week.  So please feel free to book as space is limited. Not only do we promise to leave you hairless in the designated areas but our practice with professionalism and confidence might just have you taking a nap as we provide the service. So, with waxing behind us we continue to practice on mani’s and pedi’s.

IMG_9848

We are learning both straight and French, light and dark colours, lacquers and gels. I discovered just like waxing, it is not as simple as it looks with mani’s and pedi’s. There is a real science to looking at the foot for diseases and disorders, cleaning up the foot through cutting, filing, scraping callouses and dead skin, cleaning up cuticles to create beautiful smile line.

We covered all the knowledge in class first so we would be prepared and armed with knowledge of the physiology and anatomy of feet and hands and the diseases and disorder we will come across at work. So, all this before we even dip that brush into that beautiful bright colour that will put a smile on our clients face! In our case especially, since spring is literally right around the corner.

IMG_9847

With many a model day, practicing on each other and some paying clients we are approaching spa approved mani’s and pedi’s. Thanks to Vanessa our talented, intelligent, and patient instructor. She taught us how to hold that bottle of polish, how to stabilize the foot or hand we are painting and because of this we are rarely flooding nails and completing a service in spa time.   We also got the opportunity to join Raelyn’s class last week and started learning nail art.  We are now busy practicing flowers and animal prints. An added bonus to offer a client who wants something extra special in their service.  As I mentioned this is a real science and takes a lot of practice, patience and a chuckle now and then.  With this service, I can only say practice, practice, and practice again!  So, with all that we continue to finish our quota’s.

IMG_9849

We are now focusing on skin and specifically the face. Understanding the different skin types, the needs, the contraindications, the realistic expectations of a service. I have mature skin so no matter how many treatments my 20 something skin is no longer. However, maintenance, lifestyle, and sun protection will keep my beautiful healthy skin radiant. This knowledge and more I have learned in the last few chapters of our textbook. The presentation Krystle gave us in the fall about SkinCeuticals is being implemented. We are using models, clients and each other to practice and learn skin types, issues, SkinCeutical products, hot cabbie for towels, steamer for preparation of extractions, masks to bring impurities to the surface and massage.  It is a real toss up some days whether the facial and products used is the best part of the service or if the massage itself is really the best.

Hmmmm, I believe I need to do more homework on this and I promise to get back to you next time…….lol.

Behind the scenes in the classroom, we have been studying communicating for success, basics of nutrition, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, electricity, facial treatments, facial massage, skin analysis, physiology and histology of the skin and diseases and disorders of the skin. We just finished all that study last week with our midterm. Quizzes, projects and tests kept us busy and better prepared to know how to take care of our clients when performing treatments. All this knowledge has built our confidence and the importance of knowing the parts of the body we are working on. It is about pleasure and fun for sure but is also about the safety of that client too.

So, the Evening Esthie’s have been very busy.  We reached our half way point in the course the other day. I must say the time has really flown and the experience thus far has been simply amazing. A small class and our great instructor Vanessa has really made this journey to a new career wonderful.

Well I am happy I got a chance to chat and keep everyone up to date on the evening class. We are unique in size and class time and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am so grateful Delmar offered this night class as an option and hope that once they see their first one graduate in July they offer it again! So, until next time keep those hairs on the cheese cloth, tint those brows and eyes lashes, get those nails and toes painted and throw a flower on for the spring, and finish it off with a facial showing off that healthy beautiful skin you have. Face the world with confidence as you are truly beautiful at Delmar.

2017 at Delmar: February’s Recap

Here’s a look at what we got up to around the college in February.

Our students were BUSY. On the floor, in the classroom, with clients, and in all departments, it was non-stop.

We started and ended the month with a men’s hair cutting workshop for some of our classes. Our students cut the hair of almost 100 men between those two days. It was great practice for them all and we also want to thank all of the guys that came down and helped support a student. You guys rock!

Speaking of rock, we had another successful student photo shoot with the amazing Brandon Shaw from Analog Dog Creative. Here’s a few shots to give you a taste. Professional images to come soon.

We would also like to send out a huge thank you to our staff and students that participated in the Kids Cancer Care Shave Your Lid for a Kid event at Samuel W Shaw school. $16,000.00 was raised!

The Evening Esthie’s Blog Takeover #3 by Teneika Dennie

Walking in on our first day, I had a pen and a 100 page Hilroy notepad. The other girls all had binders, different coloured pens and post-its. I thought this was going to be an easy class to ace. That we would learn how to work some skin care machines and do some mani’s and pedi’s. Boy, was I wrong! But then again any occupation that ends in –cian should be challenging.

I never dreamed that I would have to learn about the anatomy of the body, hair and nails. Let alone their diseases and disorders. Its amazing how the body works and how much I, as an esthetician can have an affect on it.

untitled-design-3

I’m lucky to have a small class and an amazing instructor, Vanessa.  She makes me want to come to class by including us in whatever she’s teaching and how she’s teaching it. She encourages us and always makes sure we have what we need. It’s important to have a teacher who takes time to understand you and take interest in your success. I was terrified to wax eyebrows in the beginning, I mean eyebrows can literally make or break a persons face. So, I borderline forced my instructor to stay with me every time I did them. But with Vanessa’s support, attention to detail and precision; I have grown more confident. I plan on perfecting this skill and no longer fearing it.

20170204_095223

Having only 4 women in my class has been one of the best educational experiences ever. We all have different opinions and views on life and in class.  In a larger class you don’t really get to know everyone. I love that I’ve got the chance to see how everyone works and the method to their madness.

This month we’ve finally moved past waxing, manicures and pedicures. We’ve made our way into facials and skin care. I’ve been so excited for this one!! I love giving facial massages. With the relaxation music and knowing the client is completely at ease, I too am at ease. There’s less pressure and it’s just me, the facial products, and the music.
